72 gallon make over

hello everyone

i just got a CO2 system recently, so im doing a complete make over of my tank.

I recently order 4 bags of flourite black sand to place at the bottom.

I was thinkin of adding dirt (1in) under the sand..

problem is

what kind of potting soil do i put in the tank?

also i already have 12-15 fish in my current set up

will soil cause an ammonia spike or n e other problems for my fish?

4 angels
4 rainbows
3 gouarims
2 cory cats

any feedback would be wonderful

You will probably have an initial ammonia spike, but how long it last depends upon how much plant volume you have and if how much beneficial bacteria you have in your filter and possibly substrate. I only mention the latter because some people have mentioned keeping bags of old substrate in new tanks temporarily, but I don't know its effectiveness. You would have to use testing kits to verify when everything is ok.

I put my fish back into the tank within 6 hours of changing to a soil substrate. I have a lot of plants though, and kept my filter running in my temporary tank. I also aired out the soil for 12 hours. The fish seemed fine. I wouldn't put them in there immediately though.

Did you want to put dirt straight into the tank or did you want to mineralize it first? For straight dirt, most people use Miracle Gro Organic Potting Mix. If you want to mineralize it, then you want to use the cheapest topsoil you can find. There is a topic with a lot of info on mineralizing on this board.
