MTS in tank along with Sand

I have nothing but problems with my tank using miracle grow, so since I had to move my tank anyway, I decided to go with MTS, that will be about 1 inch deep. I decided to go with the Caribsea Tahitian Moon Sand. How deep should the cap be over the MTS? I was thinking 2 inches?

I think part of my problem with the old setup is that I had way to much Sand. Not sure for certain, but I about threw up from the smell when I pulled all the old stuff out last night. It was sulfer/rotten egg smell.

mineralized top soil is a great idea, cuts down on the need to fertilise the water coloum. the usual depth of the sand over the top is around 1.5inches. i have got 2 inches of mineralised top soil, then 1.5inches of richgro aquatic potting mix (fossilized sea sponges) then an inch of black quartz and its working like a charm. good luck

3-4 inch total, 1 inch soil, 2-3 inch sand.
