What Substrate?

I will be re-doing my tank next weekend, and I need to decide on new substrate. I will be setting it up with dirt (MTS).

I ordered CaribSea Instant Aquarium Tahitian Moon Gravel, but the company I ordered from having a difficult time in finding stock, so I might need to go with something else.

I was thinking Black Fluorite sand.

Wil the TMG work OK with Corys and Loaches, if I decide to wait for it? Or would be better off to go with the Black Fluorite?

I need to order in the next few hours though if I want to get the Flourite this week.

Thanks

Yes. TMS is fine for cories and loaches.

As far as what substrate to choose, this is really a decision for you to make. TMS is fine grained, flourite is more granular. Big difference.

I have Black Diamond now, my water just never very clear, I like the smooth feel though.

I like to go with the TMS, but seems they are having a hard time finding it. I ordered it a week ago still has not shipped.

First off, patience is the key to anything, especially with this hobby. If you like the look of the TMS, then wait for it. I personally like it and have used it before. Stuff is pretty easy to plant in.

Use that time to prep everything else. Get you plumbing set up, play with hardscape, research your plants, etc.

Just an idea.

+1 on waiting. If you really want something and end up going with another item out of impatience, you may end up regretting it.

I've learned that lesson many times over. Always better to wait for EXACTLY what you want or it won't necessarily feel as satisfactory.

The problem...The tank was torn down 2 days ago, because room in my house was having work done. The TMS was supposed to ship on Thursday and be at my house middle part of this week and it did not even ship yet and I cannot get ETA as to when it will ship. The problem is I am leaving week from today for vacation for 2 weeks. Not worried about my fish they are in small qtank, and my bio media is fine as well, the problem is the plants. I don't think they will last 3 weeks while I am gone in a bucket. That why I am trying to determine an alt substrate.

They'll last in a bucket if there's water movement, lighting and a nutrient source.

Stick your diffuser in the bucket and hang a light over it - a CFL from the hardware store with a standard clamp-style fixture is cheap and works well.

You could then just add your ferts to the water and you'll likely be fine.

Forgot to mention: if it's just for a week or two, you won't even really need much of a great reflector for a bucket. If you've got a standard lamp of some sort, you can even spread a piece of aluminum foil above it and get a pretty solid deal going on. A good CFL can be obtained at the local grocery store, typically, for just a couple bucks.

And I have to say - I'm certain my significant other wishes this weren't reality. Because there is almost always a 5gal bucket (or two) in the middle of the kitchen or in one of the bathrooms with spare plants.
