Black Diamond Safe For Cherries ?

Looking to change my flourite substrate (cant see the shrimp) for black diamond sand blasting sand. Went to the store to buy it today and the guy that served me asked what i was using it for. I told him for my shrimps and he said "i wouldnt, its full of metals" I told him people on forums have been using it for years will no ill effects and he went on to say that the sand is Coal slag which is basically all the leftovers metals that come out from a coal fired boiler. He even grabbed a magnet and and ran it up and down the bag, sure enough the sound of sand was follwing this magnet up and down the bag.
I just want to make sure before i put this sand in that people are actually using it without any casualties ?
