Black Diamond or Petco Sand?

Anyone have any thoughts on either of these? Other than the Black Diamond is way less money.

Black Diamond is around 8 dollars for 50 lbs bag
PetCo Sand is around 18 for 20 lbs bag

Any reason not to use the Black Diamond?

Black Diamond has been good for me so far. Very clean and uniform, no cloudiness etc. Just about to start dosing when my package arrives.

Thank you for the offer, but I moved a while back to NC, just not able to update that on boards.

Jim - I just re-scaped and syphoned off all the Black Diamond out of my 40 leaving the MTS. I was amazed I did NOT have a mushroom cloud of mud.

I tried something a little different. I used Sakrete All Purpose Sand ($5 for 60#s) http://www.sakrete.com/products/deta...tiPurpose-Sand.

It's more fine gravel that actual sand. I ran it through a doubled window screen sieve. Then I rinsed it out. Maybe a full shovel full of actual sand? The rest fine gravel.

I like it so far. I have darker leaved plants and the Black Diamond just made the tank too dark. I don't like PFS as it's just not natural looking. This actually looks like you might find it in a stream.

I used Petco Sand...

Only because I had nowhere around me that sells Black Diamond.

Both are black... both are inert... I doubt any difference will be had besides price.

Black diamond has already been washed (according to the bag it comes in) However the 1st time i tried it, it left an oily residue on the surface which did eventually (2 days) settle. The 2nd time i used it i made sure i rinsed it and no oily residue :-)

I do have a question myself about this product though (hijacked i know) Does anybody use black diamond in shrimp tanks ? When i get a magnet and run it up and down the bag i can hear particles moving with the magnet which makes me believe there are metals in the sand.
