Working with sand and ADA Aquasoil

Hey guys! I am planning my next tank and I want to have a beach of sand in the front of the tank and maybe a river in the middle of the tank to the back. It's going to be a Mr. Aqua 17.4 gallon. So I'm just looking for tips on how to do this and to maintain the Aquasoil and the sand so they don't mix.

Also what sand would you recommend with the new Amazonia Aquasoil? I'm thinking the Nile sand but I also like the lighter look

Use cardboard when you put the substrate in to separate them and remove when you are done. Or keep plastic in there permanently. If you youtube Olive Knott he does this all the time.
