ADA Aquasoil tannins

I got some used aquasoil from a friend. I don't know how long his tank was up for but I just filled my tank after a dry start and the water is still a little bit yellow. I just did a water change yesterday and it became yellow again. How long until the tannins are completely gone? Will they eventually be gone completely or will there still be some residue of the tannins left?

Would purigen fix this problem? I read that it "expires" within a month. Does that mean you have to buy another one every month or do you bleach it when its done?

"The only downside I can think of is that it did "expire" relatively quickly (about a month) and I am on my first recharge. Recharging requires a 24 hour soak in bleach and an 8 hour soak in dechlorinator, so while it's an easy task, it's not quick."

Well AS has a high a tendency to release ammonia when initially introduced into the aquarium thus you see what appears to be tannins (which only are released from plant bark sources, AFAIK) in the coloration of your water. Eventually it will clear up by itself as the bacteria grow in your filtration media. You can however use Purigen in your filter for excellent results in clearing up this discoloration. Purigen does not "expire". It is a resin, that you can use repeatedly - it turns a brown color when its capacity to absorb has been reached by which time you should rinse with Bleach to "recharge" it. The length between "expiration" as you put it depends on a number of variables like water volume, nutrient and tannin concentrations, etc. But to circumvent these issues, one can always use more than one packet of Purigen at a time to increase it's absorption capabilities. The stuff is really magic, lol. I and many people swear by it...Hope that helps?!

Prigen will fix it. The cloudy yellow is probably the substrate that has broken down and is washing out

I just broke down my tank with AS so I could give it a good rinsing to remove all the silt/mud from it. When I filled it back up last week, it got pretty stained as well. Still a bit left as of yesterday after two big water changes. Think it will eventually get there. I may just do one more wc today and that should do it.

Okay cool. I've only done two water changes so far lol. Would a 100ml packet of purigen been enough for an eheim 2215?

Depends on the size of the tank and the volume of water you're trying to clear up, not the filter dimensions. I'd go with two packets just in case...
