Can I mix fluval stratum with gravel?

I have plain topfin epoxy coated gravel. When i got started i did not know about special substrates. Question is can i add a layer of Fluval stratum for planted aquariums to the one I already have I there? On the back is says not to mix with other gravels, why is that?
The fluval stratum for planted tanks is bigger granules. Could I just scoop out the old gravel as much as I can and put in the Fluval stratum substrate? Still don't know why on the package it says not to mix gravels. Why us that? What will happen if I add it?

I suspect mixing Fluval stratum with gravels will crush stratum since they can turn to powder. Other than that, Fluval wants you to pay more money for their substrate.

I wouldn't do i, I too think the gravel will crush it through shear weight and movement(from planting stuff/disturbance), and it will look ugly.
