Instead of a gravel vac, use a perhaps 1/2" hose, that should suck it out.
Assuming you are relocating your fish during the ordeal, you could just drain the tank and use a cup to scrape it all out. Preferably without scratching the glass.
yup smaller the diamater the stronger the suction is, just basic physics..truthfully it doesn't really matter how 'long' the hose is for say, because if the hose is longer and hanging straight down thats just more water weight to build up the siphion/suction..

Took my flourite black sand outa my tank on accident, and even with a normal siphion attachment on, it still takes some out...i'd prolly vaccum it before you do that just to prevent debris from getting stired up..@least thats just my 2cents for this one..
