I think it depends on how near to your location you can find it. I'm under the impression that ~$8-~$10ish for a 50lb bag is pretty typical.

but, that's just what I read in various forums, etc. I don't think I've ever seen it for sale myself, so...

Most people are using Black Diamond sand. 20-40 grit.

Some local Tractor Supply Stores

Play sand has all kinds of crap in it. It's not washed, has bits of organics in it, and is not sourced in any particular way, so what you get in one bag can be quite a bit different in another. It is also not sieved to consistent grain size, so you get dust and pebble-sized pieces in it. That's ok, but the dust part can be irritating. And lastly, the light color shows off every piece of poop and mulm.

$8 for 50 lbs is a bargain compared to the prices some people are paying for substrate. Price Aquasoil sometime!

Cheers

So you probably still have to rinse this stuff though right?

Yep, i didn't wash mine and my fish were acting stressed for a few days. I did a couple big water changes and that seemed to help. So yes, soak and rinse coal slag for a few days in buckets before you dump it in the tank.

I didn't kill any fish so it couldn't be that bad for them but they were acting weird.

That's one reason I hate sand lmao, I don't mind it when it's nice and warm outside but I might have to do it soon lol. Tired of looking at this nasty old play sand.

I'll play the Devil's Advocate here and tell you that I didn't rinse mine, and I had no bad reaction from my animals. Some particles like to float a bit till they lose the air surrounding them, but they settle down pretty quickly.

If you have fish in the tank, I would take them out and put the new stuff in the tank and let sit for a day and then reintroduce the fish back. Some wash theirs, but I just put mine right in the tank (Black Diamond). After a few hours, the tank was crystal clear.

Well actually I'll be switching from a 55 to a 75, so it shouldn't be too bad. I think I might rinse it a few times, or I might become lazy and put it in just like that lmao.

Is this stuff the same as Black Diamond? I wonder how the grain size compares.
