Dirt (MGOPM + Eco-Complete) and Air Pockets?

Hi Guys,

Tank is about 1 1/2 monthsold. I can go around with tweezers and push down on cap or poke into substrate and a bunch of bubbles will be released.

I recall hearing this is the BAD part of dirt, and you need to ensure these do get released, but what is my best course of action here?

Not a major concern (imo). I'll poke around with my planting tweezers when trimming or if I see the substrate starting to mound up (trapped gas pocket).
As bacteria break down the organics CO2 is produced and it bubbles out. (good thing) This lasts on average about year.
Even the gasses from anaerobic bacteria are not a biggie either because with enough food present the gasses released are from the splitting of NO3 into nitrogen and O2 (oxygen).

If they don't smell when they "pop" at the surface then they are irrelevant. A minor inconvenience perhaps when you are planting or removing a plant.

If they have the rotten egg smell, they are probably still nothing to worry about, but are potentially a cause for concern. The rotten egg smell(sulfur dioxide) is poisonous but the bubbles you see released aren't in contact with the water long enough to do anything. It's only when large pockets form and are disturbed that you have the potential for killing off everything in the tank(VERY rare situation). If your soil bed is deep enough the gas will processed and removed by bacterial action and never cause a problem for your tank. That's why it's often recommended that you not stir(very deeply anyways) the substrate if you are running a deep sand bed, or in this case a dirt/mud bottom.

Hope that helps.

Personally, I didn't worry about them. Some of it might have been trapped air, some of it might have been naturally created Co2 from decomposition, who knows. I didn't do anything about it and my tank is still working well.

Anytime. By the way, I'm trying to take a peek at your tank, but I don't think the linky is working. Could be me, but I think the link is FUBAR.
