will adding some sand to my substrate mess with my chemistry?

I have gravel in my tank right now. But I want to add a little sand or "Plant" substrate to my tank. I have heard of adding a new substrate completely throwing off your cycle. Isn't this true only if you completely switch out sand for gravel or vice versa? All I want to do is ADD sand/plant substrate to my gravel. I do not at all want to get rid of the gravel. Is this okay to do? Will I harm my tank at all?

If you keep a lot of the old substrate it shouldn't throw off your cycle.

People have problems when they add an active substrate (such as aquasoil) which releases ammonia into their tank. If you're adding something like eco-complete to your existing gravel you should have no problems.

Fish Shrimp tanks are like cups of coffee, one is never enough.

I have personally had zero issues(ammo/nitrite spikes) adding amazonia and malaya aqua soil substrates to already *fully* established tanks. Ive done this in my 20 long with high grade shrimp multiple times, added 9L or more at a time. And also in my 29gal with fish i've added the same amount or more and ya, no ammonia nor nitrite spikes at all. all fauna was ok. But the tanks and filters were running for 6+Months and fully cycled.
