Substrate Help

Hi, I'm starting a new planted 30gallon tank. I have some estes black sand, so I was thinking of using that as the top layer, but my question is what I should use for the bottom layer. I've heard good things about seachem flourite, any suggestions? Also am I going to have to use any fertilizing tabs, or anything like that? Thanks

Why not just use either one of those two materials? I don't see any advantage to using them in layers. If your tank is a high light tank you will need to fertilize heavily per the sticky in the fertilizing forum, and use pressurized CO2. If your tank is a low light tank, you might only need substrate fertilizer tabs and, possibly, Excel.

I'll just use the estes, I was under the impression I needed a fertilizing substrate. Any recommendations for fertilizing tabs?
