Topsoil substrate?

For this new tank, i picked up some topsoil from home depot. has anyone used just regular topsoil? im regretting this decision because now im getting some kind of fungus on my black diamond cap and its spread all over onto my driftwood. has anyone else used topsoil and had this problem?

Nope, I get my topsoil from a garden shop here in my town that creates their own organic top soil with nothing added to it, so it's just pure soil.

this is interesting because i dont see why im getting these results. My only guess would be that this topsoil is much more concentrated in manure, but is that really the thing thats giving me these results? Literally there is fungus all over the substrate. Im wondering if i should call it quits and just re do this tank?

I use top soil from walmart and soil back in summer.
Cap the soil or you will have a mess.
You can add whatever you like to the soil like clay, etc.

Top soil is very fine with a lot of movement it will flow everything.

I say to redo the tank over again, but this time try to find some pure organic topsoil without any manure in it. Then you can compare the new results to that of the manure topsoil.

Or you can go with some MGO potting soil, but make sure to add in some laterite which ever way you decide to go.

With my 18 gallon I go with the topsoil I mentioned, and enrich it with 3 different kinds of laterite (first layer pure laterite, floramax planted substrate, and black flourite), then I use the mud mixture of the topsoil with laterite on top of dry ferts (iron chelate, dolomite Ca & Mg, and muriate of potash). Then I cap the topsoil mixture with 1" of PFS, but I have a 2" thickness of the topsoil mixture.

can you post a pic?
I would think it would pass with time but it's no more than a guess to say that. What's in the tank besides the topsoil, blasting grit and driftwood?

Try this: Take out the soil, bake or boil the driftwood, bleach the tank and filter (and anything that's come into contact with the tank), and dip the plants in potassium permanganate (Jungle Clear Water - you want the dip water to be bright pinky-purple). Quarantine any fish in a bare-bones tank (heater, box filter with zeolite, and some plastic plants) for a month or so to make sure there are no spores on/in them and to give your tank time to cycle again.

That should do it.

Wish I had an answer to offer. Looking at the linked thread and pictures this is unlike anything I've seen before.

I've got 3 tanks with just top soil. Haven't had any troubles in any of the. 2 are uncapped one has a gravel cap.

Just regular top soil. Some from HD some from Lowes.
