black diamond sand oily residue

i bought a 50lb bag of black diamond sand from a local tractor supply store. while i was rinsing it off in a bucket, i noticed an oily residue on the surface of the water. i decided not to use it for my aquarium for now. i also noticed this on the surface of my fluval ebi when i used the fluval stratum. did anyone else see this?

This is a normal issue. Just make sure you rinse it very well. It will not cause any issues.

This is normal and a water change with the hose pointed up to suck it off will remove it. Never had a problem related to it.

I have recently started two tanks with black diamond sand and did not rinse it before adding it to the tanks. With filters running it was gone in several hours and I haven't noticed any ill effects on my plants. If you run a forum search for black diamond blasting sand you'll find a couple other good threads.

As stated, the oily residue is completely normal and safe. People have even put their fish in while the residue is still present and they were perfectly okay/healthy.
