Eco Complete Thickness?

I just ordered a case of the Eco Complete Substrate and was wondering how thick of a layer I should add to my tank and could I just add an inch or 2 then cap it with some black sand as a cheap filler?

I have a 75g tank its going into, and ordered 2 - 20lb bags, any idea how much that will cover for me? If I will need more for sure I will try and get another bag or two when I can get some more money.

Thanks in advance, Ben

Guess what I'm trying ask is how little can I get by with if capped with something else but yet still be beneficial to the plants?

Eco is a fairly large grain size, so it's more something you would cap with than be capped. Smaller grain size (like sand) tends to wind up on the bottom. Check a substrate calculator like https://www.plantedtank.net/substratecalculator.html or http://mizuworld.com/index.php/pages/calculator to get a better idea.
