top soil lower ph to much

As the title says I have a 55gal tank with capped top soil that is thickly planted. The problem is that the ph is dropping to low around 5.6 and lower which casued some fish deaths. Any way to increase the ph, I know calcium carbonate will increase it but don't have any good fish store with reef rocks to buffer it. Is there anyother options?
Thanks

Are you adding co2? What's the Kh of your source (pH also) and tank water? Any additives in the substrate? What is the sub capped with? Ammonia? Water change schedule?

No co2 is being added the tap water is ph 7 while the tanks oh is 10 if that. The soil is capped with flint gravel, water changes are usually done once a week the Max two weeks. As for additivesbi dont add any don't know if the owner before added anything. Though I sometimes add some plant fertilizer. 1 a week.

A 5.6 pH is very unlikely to cause fish deaths. Whatever is causing the low pH may also be a problem for the fish, but I don't know what that would be. You could probably do a lot of good with several 50% water changes, like one every 3-4 days. That would be likely to eliminate whatever is in the water causing the problems. (Unless your tap water is bad).
