No substrate

Can I start my planted tank without a gravel substrate? My LFS have informed me it's delayed by over a week from today. But the CO2 will be in by Saturday

I have JBL Aquabasis substrate fert and am wondering whether I can put this in and plant my bunches of stem plants then add a few AE fish and shrimp after a few days having monitored the water params. I am impatient as I want to get started but even more so the Mrs is on my back with the old 'When are you going to get this fish stuff sorted, there's stuff dotted all round the house and that tank's a bloody eyesore!". . And to be fair it looks horrible bare!!

Will this method tempt some sort of algae disaster? Will there be any other problems caused? Or am I going to have to sit it out for a week with a whinging gf and a bare tank?

I would exercise patients here. We all know that after you have gravel and plants, you are going to need plenty of patients to get past the learning curve anyway. It would be a nightmare to add gravel to a tank that already has water in it, not to mention fish and plants. Hang in there

Umm, in this context, you need to use the word 'patience'.

But I agree...that JBL stuff is meant to go UNDER the rest of your substrate. left exposed to water and current, it'll mix into the water, make things cloudly, and probably cause some real problems with algae blooms.

Yeah I certainly agree with that

I really knew I couldn't do it, suppose I just wanted to assure myself that I shouldn't start early and patience is the key.

Anyways, thanks guys.

If you just use anubias on rock and java fern / moss or riccia on driftwood, you could theoretically do a "bare bottom" planted tank.....that'd be creepy...

Planted tanks are all about shrimp.

I object to the use of Sterilizer and average man in the same sentence! QQ
