What substrate to get?

Hey everyone im new to the planted tanks and im jus wondering if i could ask a few questions about substrate i have a 55g planted tank running at the moment with just plain substrate but seeing and hearing of everyone elses tanks they have a nutrient rich substrate now is there any type of nutrient rich substarte that i could mix into my substrate without taking it out? If so what would you suggest?

If you don't want to be removing the substrate you already have, the best option for you is probably to use some sort of additive fert sticks or balls that you simply push under the surface of the substrate to provide fertilisation.

Never used them myself, perhaps someone who has can give their opinions.
