Anyone have experience with Eco-mats?

I swung by the local aquarium shop tonight in search of a bag of Eco-complete. They didn't have any of course, but the guy there said what I really wanted was an Eco-mat. They didn't have any eco-mats in stock to show me but I believe it's some crazy mat you put down and then lay whatever substrate you like over top of it. Anyone have any experience with Eco-mats?

I would like to break my tank down this weekend, and could easily have the Eco-mat in time. Anyone know if it's worth using, or should I just hold off and order some Eco-complete instead?

Woe.
Yeah, I don't think that's what the guy at the store was referring to.

If an eco mat removes nitrates, you don't want it. Your plants need nitrates for food.

it sounds like a scam anyways.

I don't think that's the right Eco-Mat, that Eco-Mat is used for filtering enormous aquariums such as Sea World's, Shedd, etc.

Eco Mats are typically used in hanging basket liners.. Its that fiberous wooden stuff you often see.. Some places use Sphagnum or Peat for this purpose as well.

He's probably recomending Peat plates.. This does work, as long as you are buying the prepared versions for aquariums and you dont use too much.
