How much MG top soil?

I'm going to used sifted Miracle Grow at the bottom of my new 75g. I've also got 40lbs of Eco Complete and a ton of small black gravel I planned to use as a cap. Tank will be high light, C02, and ferts if that makes a difference.
How much Miracle Grow do I need?
Also do I just sift it through a regular household strainer?
Any other tips?

Just chiming in because I want to see what others say. I plan to do this in the future with a worm casting/sand blend. I'm not sure if you should mineralize the Miracle Grow? Also are you sure that it is chemical free?

Definately not mineralizing it. Too much work, too messy, and too time consuming. I'm going to use the Organic kind that many here have used with success.

How many inches of depth did the one bag get you? Also how many pound bag? If they come in different sizes. I don't think I'll get much of any of a cap with the Eco Complete.

Wow a big bag was more than enough for 1" thickness in my 55g tank. I used maybe a 1/2 of it

With the soil going in dry it can be 'fluffy' for lack of a better word.
You want no more than 1 1/2" packed down for your soil layer. About an inch of cap starting out works for me. Wanting more depth I used 1/2" base of sand, soil, then cap to gain a total of 3" starting out. As the organics break down and the soil compress's I add more cap material later.(months later)

1" to 1 1/2" maximum depth has worked well for me. Wetting doesn't really compress MG. With the dirt dry place the palm of your hand flat and press down (not major force) you'll get an idea of what the thickness will be after the cap settles in over it wet that way.

I bought mine on clearance from Lowes for 4.67 a bag. I think the bag is either 14lb or 17lbs. They have the big bag but I did not see it for the Organic mix.
