Maximum thickness of pool filter sand?

I am resealing my 55 gallon and am getting rid of my play sand (what a mistake that stuff was). Is there a thicknes with pfs where you have to worry about anaerobic conditions? I want to go 4" in the back and 1.5" in the front.

4" at the rear is a touch deep, but you should be ok if you keep an eye on it, and do a little occasional stiring, particularlly if you see any darkening areas when viewing through the glass at sides and back of the tank.
