What should I use?

I am currently setting up a small nano (under a gallon) tank that will only house a rock and some moss and possibly HC. I currently have Flourite and enough to fill the bottom of the jar (4x4in.). I would love some black substrate and I like that look better but I dont want to buy an entire bag of something. Does anyone have suggestions on what I can use cheaply? I could use some flourite but I would love a black look on top.

Thanks.

Check your local fish stores. Often they sell substrates by the pound. There is some very black sandblasting slag called Black Beauty or Black Diamond etc that you might be able to get cheaply.

I'm not sure if they're aquarium safe, but some places sell decorative sand and small gravel of many [natural and clown puke] colors very cheaply. My local dollar store sells sand that's the same shade as the tahitian moon sand and what looks like crushed lava rocks in 1/2 pound plastic bags. I think walmart and other big chain store does this too, but abit more expensive. Another one is the smallest package [I think 5lbs] of CaribSea Naturals sand in petco/petsmart for around 8usd after taxes; they have tahitian moon sand.

I'd just buy the tahitian moon sand, incase you might want to upgrade or add another nano tank.

Currently out of the hobby

Could I use some Miracle Grow by itself?

The tank would be mostly undisturbed.. just some moss and possibly shrimp

You would not be able to anchor plants in it. Even if you put weights on them they would slowly drift through your tank.

Might be interesting to test.
