Aqua soil makes water smell weird?

My aquarium water smells like my substrate, ADA AS Amazonia. My husband doesn't mind the smell because he thinks it smells like wet soil, but to me it just smells awful - like rotting vegetation and cat pee.

How long (if ever) before it goes away?

Maybe after several weeks of water changes. I use the same substrate and didn't think it was that bad lol! Try activated carbon in your filter... might help.

I'm guessing that may the very reason Amano designed and sell this lil doohickey:

http://www.adana.co.jp/en/products/na_co2/air_sweeper/

"Forest fragrance Clean Beads reduces the aquarium tank odor during the aeration at night."...what a great line!!

I haven't started dozing ferts yet. I figured the AS is full of nutrients right now. The tank has been set up only since the 9th. The smell is making me seriously consider replacing the AS.

The AS is leeching ammonia. After your tank is cycled, the smell will disappear. As long as you do weekly water changes, the fishtank smell disappears even further.
