How to make sandy area next to AS area?

I really want to get a herd of habrosus corys, but I don't have any sand in my tank, only AS right now.

We were going to section off a part of the tank and replace the AS with fine sand. Do you folks foresee any issues with this? Will the sand develop anaerobic pockets? How do I keep the sand from mixing with the AS eventually?

If you keep the sand area pretty fairly shallow (1-2 inches) I don't think it would go anaerobic. If you're really worried about it you could stir it carefully whenever you clean your tank.

Some of the sand will undoubtedly end up in the AS and vice versa, but if you put a physical barrier between the two (vertical piece of thin plastic or slate), you can probably control the mixing to your level of obsessiveness (ie whether you want to pick out every single piece of AS that falls in the sand or not). The sand will mostly fall down between the AS and be out of sight if it happens to get some on that area. If you picked a dark colored sand it wouldn't be a very big visual deal if a little AS got in the sand and vice versa.

Joy to the fishes!

I use rocks to divide the line b/w sand and aquasoil. But make sure there's a physical barrier between the two and not have the sand capped over the AS at all, the brazil nut effect will cause the larger AS particles to rise to the top.
