Question Changing my Substrate...any tips? Please Help

as of now i just have regular gravel in my 80g tank. i have had success with it in the past but i want to do it right now

i am thinking of ordering 3 bags of Eco-Complete for it.

how should i go about this? should i just remove everything from the tank, leave the filters alone and switch it all out?

how would you do it, if it was your tank?????

Assuming your tank dimensions are something like 48" x 18", and you want a 3" substrate, you'll need around 7 20lb bags of Eco Complete.

For something that big, yes, I'd probably remove everything, though I would probably rinse some of the old substrate in tank water and add the water back to the tank. And yes, I wouldn't clean the filters for awhile afterward.

For something that big, people tend to use the cheaper substrates like pool filter sand or coal slag, maybe capping some MTS or potting soil.

I just did this exact thing not too long ago.

I first took all the fish out and placed them in a giant Rubbermaid container with the filter and heater.

I then took out all the plants and put them in a bucket and removed the old gravel.

Then put the Eco-Complete in and added the water conditioner that comes with the Eco-Complete.

Put the filter and heater back on and then added the fish back.
