crushed lava rock for filterless tank?

Hi all,

I'll be attempting a filterless tank for some shrimp pretty soon and I've been thinking of ways to increase the surface area for bacteria. Would it be helpful at all to add a layer of crushed lava rock as the bottom layer of the substrate? Or maybe even as the top layer? Would crushed lava rock + crushed ceramic ring pieces be even better as a sort of boost to the natural biofilter? However, if they are on the top layer of the substrate, would detritus and mulm get clogged up in it too quickly and just become a mess?

Will fill with stuff and be hard to clean IMHO. Use lava rock as decoration or to attach plants to. Pfs or an active substrate would work well depending on look and well what you wanna do.

Can you add an air stone or something? Seems those that go filterless do better when they get some water movement with either shrimp or fish.

Live rock works great as a biological filter in saltwater tanks, but it relies on very good circulation throughout the tank for it to work well. So I would imagine that the same principle applies here, your biological media is only going to work if the water is circulating through or around it at a good rate. So I would be more inclined to use lava rock as decoration in high flow areas of the tank.
