I'm new and starting big...

I've never done a planted tank and have been looking into substrate. I feel like this decision is a fairly big one and I might be overthinking it but... I cant afford to do all ADA aqua soil like I would like. However after researching long and hard I cant find anything on doing something layered like a sand bottom then thinner ADA layer then some kind of thin cap of gravel to get the depth I need and a balance of nutrients and price?

ADA uses lava rock under the Aquasoil! You can raise the back with bags of it so you don't need as much of whatever substrate you end up with. Don't use sand.

Another way to go is to make a planting bed surrounded with rock and have mostly unplanted decorative sand in front. I've gone the other way around. AS in front and to the side with the rest filled with tile and bags of old substrate barely covered with AS as the scape is wood heavy, loads of epiphytes with a necklace of plants growing in substrate.
