Substrate additives help!!!

Hi guys

This is my first planted aquarium setup so I need little help from yours. I am going with fluval substrate for my tank,
Here I am confused with comparing ADA subtract.

For ADA subtract before adding soil they have used Bacter 100 then power sand then soil, my ? is should I have to use above additives for fluval substrate also or only soil is good to go.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

So Fluval Stratum is an active substrate and just like any active substrate including ada amazonia it will absorb other nutrients put into the aquarium. That is why ada has those powders, they provide additional nutrition to the tank over time. Fluval does not make something similar, you just use their substrate as is. You can add those powders to the bottom if you want just like you would for ada amazonia, however just like with ada amazonia you do not have to do this. No matter what you do you will want to add a liquid fertilizer as a regular part of your routine to keep your plants growing in the medium to long term period as the soil will eventually deplete and your plants growth will slow and eventually stall without regular liquid fertilizer.

You do not need to buy those additional powders. Just the aqua soil is enough. The rest is a waste of money.

I prefer aquasoil over fluval stratum. I would also suggest Tropica soil before stratum. The fluval brand doesn't have much nutrients.

Fluval Spec V
7x Microsynodontis sp (1)

10g Terrarium
1x Cranwelli Horned Frog

It's ideal to seed new substrate with mulm or old aquarium water. This will provide the new soil with the necessary microbes that are needed to mature the soil. It's not necessary to add any of those additives.
