Looking for A good Substrate

I recently just got into plants and it's a great thing I have been missing out on for the last 3 years.
I currently have a 110 gallon with a low tech setup some water wisteria some amazon swords and some jungle val. The substrate is just some topfin stone gravel and I am looking to get some better substrate to aquascape the sides and the back but leaves the front gravel .
I was wondering if seachem only sand would be a good choice. I have some synodontis petricola catfish and cant use anything to to rough because I do not want to damage there barbs and I dont want to use anything that will alter the ph or water chemistry to much. I used seachem flourish and seachem root tabs right now. For the Amazon sword.

Eventually I will be looking into co2 and a more high tech setup after I get used to growing easy care plants.

If anyone has any tips or suggestions that would be great. Thank you!
