Cheap Eco complete

I'm new to planted tanks, but I just ordered 60lbs of eco complete for my 29gal for $55 shipped from petco.com with coupon code anniversary40. Seemed like a good deal, thought I'd share. Says aquarium gravel is excluded for free shipping... I guess technically this isn't gravel.

I spent a long time debating my substrate, different mixes and what not. But it sounds like this is a straight forward, no washing, good quality substrate that's probably a good start for a beginner. If/when I get a second tank, maybe I'll try something else.

And the UPS guy just banged on my door with my new canopy! I'm super excited about my planted tank... I'm sure I'll be back here for more advice.

Nice find. Good luck. Eco-complete is like ground of lava rock, and will raise your TDS. You will still want to add root tabs.

Hmm. I had to google that one. Total dissolved solids, how does that impact my water quality? Is there something I need to do to control for that?

Where have you seen Eco raises TDS? I have had it in my tank for a couple years and have never had a problem.

In my tanks, not really a problem, it seems to go away with time.

New in the tank you'll see a slight rise in GH, KH, and pH nothing to panic over. First water change and it's all but inert. Saw a pH rise of about 1 degree that lasted two weeks.

I saw a small rise in hardness, and my pH was a tad high. Nothing to worry about - you'll do more harm trying to control it than you will by ignoring it, IMHO.
