Gravel vac......don't stir up substrate? I'm confused!

I've been doing lots of research on getting rid of BBA algae, it's under control but I am really working hard at keeping it that way.....I do a 50% water change each week on my 75 gallon which is only 4 months old. I have BDBS substrate.

My question: I see posts that say don't stir up the substrate when doing a water change........and others that say be sure to gravel vac as much as possible during each water change. Isn't this contradictory? Which advice should I follow? I gravel vac but I don't have too much detritus. Should I stop using the gravel vac?

When you have sand, all the detritus should be on top of the sand as the grains are fine enough, so you should be able to vac it up without having to stir up the sand - just move the vac in small circles a short distance above the sand so that you see detritus being pulled up but not sand. Whereas with gravel you would need to really get into it to get up the muck as it can settle down between larger diameter gravel.
