What's the ideal gravel size range, generally speaking, for plants?

Would 12mm - 25mm be too big?

Growing is not that difficult.

Can you explain a bit more what you plan to do with the tank - for example if you like the bigger gravel look then start with a finer 2mm gravel as your base - good for stem plant rooting and then add larger gravel to get the look - you can go all the way up in size to rocks. If you plan on mainly plants like javafern and anubias that don't root in substrate then the large gravel will be fine.

1-4mm is generally considered ideal.

Yep, 1-4mm is perfect for base.

I saved this users photo from here because it is a perfect example of using perfect base size and then scattering around pea and other stones as top dressing to get that look.
