How many bags of MGOCPM for 20G high (after sifting)?

Hey everyone,

I'm currently working on the ordering phase of my first dirted tank, a 20 gallon high. I've currently got one 8 qt. bag of the Miracle Gro potting mix on its way, but after reading a bit more online, I'm wondering if I'm going to have enough after sifting it. I thought about maybe mixing in some leftover fluval stratum or Mr. Aqua soil to make up for what is needed afterwards, but I don't actually know if that's a good idea.

I plan on 1" of dirt and 1" of a gravel cap. So how many bags of this Miracle Gro will I need to achieve 1", after sifting, in your experience?

Thanks!

A lot less than you think. The 8qt is good enough I believe

For a 1” soil layer in a 24x12 tank I come up with 288 cubic inches. 24x12x1=288

Lay bag down, flatten it out press it down hard to compress it and measure it, do same math using its LxWxH to get a rough estimate, remember it’s going to compact a bit when tanks flooded and weight of sand is pushing down on it. You can always cut it with some spaghnum or coco peat if you need a bit more.

If you've got leftover Fluval Stratum or Mr Aqua soils laying around, there's no harm in combining them to get the desired depth.

Buy yourself a bag of high quality worm castings. Wash out the tannins in a 5g bucket and let it settle and use that in addition to your soil. It will grow amazing plants.

Fluval Spec V
7x Microsynodontis sp (1)

10g Terrarium
1x Cranwelli Horned Frog
