Akadama as substrate for an aquarium

Hello everyone,

I would like your opinion and experience regarding akadama used in tanks.

I believe it is getting popular and it is way cheaper than other types of substrate.

Certainly not that popular in the US (nothing like it is in Japan and other Asian countries) as a substrate and isn't cheaper if you're using the 'red line' quality product. It had its moment between 2008 and 2012, though, before APHIS/USDA shut down most imports. Got even more scarce after Fukushima.

I still have tons of it and have used it in some of my shrimp tanks for the past decade. But in terms of value and quality? You're probably better off buying something like ADA Aqua Soil.

TL;DR: It can be good for shrimp tanks. Not really that great as a planted tank substrate in general. There's no consistent quality and its nutrient value can be hit-or-miss. You have to know what you're looking for and it takes a lot of trial and error to find good stuff.

Thank you very for the reply, that was really helpful.

So it is ok for shrimp tanks but not for planted aquarium and one should take into account any concerns for akadama source from radio-active affected areas in Japan.
