HTH pool sand at $12/50lb is perfect size. Itís one on left here. Perfect grain size for small runner plants.

I once used pool filter sand. I am not one to expect perfection but the amount of mulm on the sand was very ugly.

All substrates build mulm. It is up to you to remove it. Larger grain sizes are just hiding it. Being said, the larger grit PFS is good if supplemented with clay and soil. Again, upkeep will be important due to the high nutrients as well as an acceptance that soil will leak out and plants will be more or less stuck in place without quite a disturbance.
