Substrate depth - Miracle Grow OC capped with pool filter sand

How deep can I make a substrate of Miracle Grow Organic Choice Potting Mix capped with Pool Filter Sand? And how deep should each layer be? I would like to make this as deep as is reasonable (it is a huge tank). Is 4-5" ok for this substrate?

I try to stay at 3" total depth and so far no problems. Capping material at 1" and I used Flourite original. I'm sure others will post in.

I agree, exceed 3" total depth and you're running the risk of anaerobic spots and hydrogen sulfide gas.

Thanks. I'll go with 2" of soil and 1" of sand for 3" total.
