Riparium substrate...

Hey, I'm converting my reef tank to a planted/riparium tank. My question is I'm planning to use my overflow for the riparium, what substrate could I use that would work with the plants and allow flow through the overflow? It is an external overflow similar to a ghost overflow. Do I use hydroponic rocks or something else. All answers appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
