What's youre dirt cap? Sand or gravel?

Setting up 2 dirted tanks soon. I was going to use 1/4" pea gravel as the cap. But am unsure if I should just stick with 'sand' (black diamond). I've used black diamond in the past on 2 picos as well as gravel on 2 nanos, have had good and bad results with each.

Thinking of adding shrimp to 1 of the dirted tanks once its aged, sand would be better for them for foraging.. But I feel like sand doesn't let mulm/waste go down through and re-enrich the soil the way gravel can..

Happy to hear your input.

I've used both pea gravel and black moon sand to cap and haven't had issues with either. I noticed the pea gravel helped with releasing gas pockets easier than sand tho. If it were me I'd go with sand for the shrimp tho. I think they would appreciate it more. I would cap with more then 1/4 of an inch tho just in case the soil gets disrupted. I usually go with 3/4-1 inch soil and 3/4-1 inch cap.

ATM, I have dirt with gravel cap. But I am planning to replace the gravel with sand as it is much better in my opinion. Many fish prefer sand (loaches) and overall, its far more aesthetic to me. I am planning to use blasting sand.
