Blasting Sand Substrate?

Greetings! I just picked up a new 45 gallon tank yesterday morning. I wanted to use Black Diamond sand blasting sand for the substrate, but I cannot find this locally. Amazon wants too much in smaller bags so I wouldn't save any money vs regular aquarium sand at the big box pet stores. I guess my question is can I use a different brand of blasting sand and what material and grain size should I be looking for?

This week is the coldest week of the winter season and I can't even find pool filter sand at the home improvement stores. LOL.

No Tractor Supply Company near where you live? I have also read about people using Black Beauty sand.

Search for anyone near you that sells coal slag, that's all BDBS is. Check the SDS. If they are similar you should be good to go.

I just posted similar to Quagulator's in the other thread that you started. It can sometimes take a little while to get a reply but you should really only post your question once. It keeps things a lot easier to follow.

Did you try googling Black Diamond blasting sand? Thats what I did, and it showed me all the ways for me to get. I chose to buy it online and have it delivered to the store. The store was Tractor Supply Company. Then I just picked it up.

I got mine at Tractor Supply, but Harbor Freight, Grainger and Home Depot all list it online too. If your local store is not carrying it in stock, I know for sure Home Depot will let your order most stuff online for in-store pickup.
