Potting mix, top soil, or ada? Brands or types?

So the consensus is organic potting soil or top soil without ferts correct? Do you out osmocote down first then potting mix or top soil then cap? Is Amazonia worth it over potting mix? Any specific kind to look for?

I have done 2 types of tanks with 1 being black diamond blasting sand with osmocote ( a few pellets per plant) and I recently did the Miracle grow organic ( orange bag) cover with the balck diamond blasting sand. I would recommend doing the blasting sand only with some osmocote added. then do ferts as needed. the reason being is I've had a lot of string algae and tannins with the soil.

Interesting. I'll definitely keep it in mind. I'll have to cap somehow anyway if I do dirt so I may just go ahead and get sand and start washing while I decide

As the poster above has already mentioned, I'd forgo the topsoil and go straight blasting sand with O+ balls spread along the bottom of the tank. Spread a thin layer of sand and sprinkle the balls as evenly as you can, this way the balls do not roll all over the place when you add the rest of the sand.

The topsoil will grow plants thats been proven, but it does become messy. Its almost impossible to not disturb the soil under the cap when you pull up a plant.
