Anyone swapped gravel for sand?

I'm sure that it'll cause a cycle to happen, I was wondering if you put 50% of the water from the old tank in (as well as old media, etc), would that speed up the cycle process?

No loss of fish. Used 100% conditioned new tap water, used all cycled media from the filters.

You rock, thanks for that. How long did you run your filter before you added your fish back?

I actually just replaced all of my substrate a week ago. I had soil with black diamond blasting sand cap but my corys kept digging in my sand and causing the soil to come up and it was a horrible mess. Cleaning the sand was a nightmare. But anyways, I took half my tankwater and filled a 40 gallon tank and put all my fish in it with a cycled sponge filter and a heater. Drained the tank and removed all the substrate and put new black diamond sand in. Filled it up with fresh water and put my fish back in and put my tank water back in. Was done in a couple of hours. No cycle and the fish are fine
