Substrate Change?

I have had this unknown black gravel-like substrate in my aquarium ever since I started it, about a year ago. I cannot remember what it is, but I am pretty confident that it is ada aquasoil. I have attached an image of it. Plants have always had trouble getting rooted in, and the only plant that has truly thrived is rotala indica and cryptocoryne undulata. Even with root tabs and liquid ferts, many of my plants are struggling to stay alive. I do not dose co2 as I keep shrimp as well.

Would you recommend that I switch substrates? If so, what is an affordable substrate I should switch to? Will that help will plant growth?
