BDBS and Potting Soil?

I'm getting a new tank in December. It's a 30 gallon column and I've been doing tons of research. For the past 4 years all of my tanks have been fake plants and just some gravel but this time I want to do live plants and more of like a sand gravel somewhere in between so for substrate I was thinking of doing Miracle-Gro organic Choice potting mix capped with black diamond blasting sand either the fine or medium grade (I'm not sure yet) so has anybody tried that? Does work well? Also I want to not have the blasting sand sucked up into my filter does anybody know if the fine grit gets sucked up or not or if it's hard to clean? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I've used the medium, works great.

Sift the potting soil then soak it to remove anything that floats.
BDBS medium is the ticket.

This combination is in all my tanks.

Growing is not that difficult.

Okay, are there any issues with the filter sucking it up or fish being scraped at all?

Alright sounds awesome, thanks!
