Help with substrate

Currently have a mix of tan and black regular gravel. I started adding some telanthra, dwarf hairgrass, cryps. Not a lot of plants yet but getting more. I want to add some better substrate but my wife is adamant about she likes gravel so it has to stay. But was thinking of maybe adding flourite? I need the substrate to be black and larger not sand size. I use flourish and excel. Want to add some more carpet grass and taller plants in the back.

Is there a better option than flourite that I can add to my gravel to help plants grow? I have an upgraded light fluval aquasky led and 60 gallon tank. Fish are cichlids.

What kind of cichlids?
How tall is the tank? -- Fluval Akuesky is a low powered LED and may only be enough for very low-light plants in a 60 gallon.
Flourite will help your plants grow by about 0, it contains nothing plants can utilize.
Gravel is perfectly fine. Here is a picture of a jungle tank of mine that has large gravel as the substrate:

Notice I have crypts / easy stem plants / some finer foreground plants that are growing great. This is with a single Fluval 2.0 LED on a 90 gallon. So about twice the amount of light as your Aquasky. This tank receives very cost effective lean dry dosing into the water column (KNO3, KH2PO4, K2SO4, MgSO4, CSM+B) and some cheap DIY root tabs.

Gravel works really well as long as you choose your plants accordingly !

Hope this helps.

Yea I'm not looking for high light plants as I'm not doing a co2 system yet. Kinda leary of that. The tank is pretty tall at 21 inches I think. Maybe I need some root tabs too. Or nitrogen. Like I said I'm gonna add more plants. What arw some taller plants that arent high light also would like some aquascape ideas.

Judging by your fish selection I don't think fertilizers or substrate will help...

Maybe try some anubias, java fern, bolbitus (attached to wood / rocks)

Maybe try some crypts and some sword plants with some root tabs... Those MIGHT take the beating from those fish, but they might get chewed up pretty quick....
