Which Fe supplement do use?

I have my dosing all down, except for some Fe. Any suggestions?

Hi @STS_100,

Actually it's two questions; which Fe supplement should I use? and how much should I dose?

Which Fe supplement has a lot to do with the pH of your tank; with a pH below 7.0 most supplements will work however with a pH of 7.0 or higher a Fe supplement using ferrous gluconate is probably the best.

There are a lot of opinions on 'how much' iron is the correct amount to dose and I don't know if there is a 'perfect' number since iron needs can vary per plant species (and of course you don't want to dose more than the fauna can tolerate). I am currently dosing about 0.70 ppm per week. Since I have several tanks I about 3.0 ppm comes from dosing CSM+B and the remainder comes from ferrous gluconate.

I am sure others will weigh in on their dosing experiences.

Seattle_Aquarist, thanks for the reply - I wasn't even aware of pH considerations! Still so much to learn in this hobby!

Admins, my apologies for newbishly posting this thread in the Substrate forums. If you could kindly move it to the ferts section, I would appreciate it. Sorry!

I don't use CSM+B for micros so I use 11% DTPA Fe (dry) and Flourish Iron (Gluconate) in tandem... Target Fe is .3ppm...

there are 4 basic choices:

Iron EDTA max PH 6.5.
Iron DTPA max PH 7.5.
Iron EDDHA max PH is about 11.
Iron Gluconate is not PH sensitive but degrades rapidly once added to the tank. So it is best to add it about once every two days. SeaChem does sell a liquid iron gluconate fertilizer called Flourish iron.

The PH sensitive once will stay stable as long as the PH is OK. So you can dose them less often if desired. All are available on Amazon.com as well as other web sites.

Some other liquid iron fertilizers are a mix of some of the above.
