BDBS topped with stones - ease of cleaning?

Hi all,
I am thinking about setting up my 90 gallon tank and trying to make up my mind on substrate. I think I would like to go with BDBS topped with some large stones. The stones wouldn't be bunched tightly together or stacked on top of each other so the BDBS would peak through. The look would be similar to this (but black):

I am wondering if anyone currently has a setup like this, and if it's a pain to keep clean and free of debris?

Also, is there a major difference between the fine and medium grade BDBS? I remember super fine sand being annoying to deal with during cleaning and water changes so I was thinking the medium might be easier.
