egg crate in between gravel/sand mix
Hey guys, ive been having trouble with my blood parrot digging his way through 4 inches of sand and dirt down to the glass and the resulting release of bark and organics has caused a bba spike and ugly tannins.
I know i could just fill up the hole and throw some purigen in till the water clears but i needed an excuse to put some black substrate in over the dirt.
I got 2 bags of natures care garden soil, 50lbs of topfin black gravel, and 75lbs of nat geo's black sand. I am aiming for an initial 2 inch of dirt, 1 inch of gravel, and 1 inch of sand.
My plan was to lay the dirt even all around, place an eggcrate just above the layer of dirt sitting on 2 inch cuts of pvc as its support. Then lay all the pebble gravel first, then the sand as a cap on top.
I am aware that the sand will sink to the bottom of the gravel but thats actually what i am going for as i want the gravel to slowly emerge through the sand over time.
My biggest concern is the ability for plants to send their roots to the soil through the eggcrate filled with gravel.
I wanted to cover the whole tank in case my parrot decides to make holes everywhere and i can just fill it back up without worrying about dirt spraying everywhere.
Possible? Or do i need a seperate solution
