New bag of Turface smells bad when damp?

So I am about ready to start dumping in some more Turface into one of my tanks and opened a new bag this evening. It literally has a urine type smell (think used kitty litter) when it gets wet. Is this bag ruined or will the smell go away with a lot more rinsing/soaking? I've used it many times before and this is the first time I've had any issue. Has anyone else experienced this?

I wouldn't use it. I haven't used any Turface, but the SMS, essentially the same stuff, I used had no smell at all. That almost makes me think a dog has used the unopened bag as a fire hydrant, and it soaked in. Now, the particles have adsorbed the urine.

So sad. Luckily, I had two bags left. I hope the other one doesn't smell. I'll just keep the other to clean up spills in the basement and such.

Do you have a cat? One of mine peed on a bag of Soilmaster Select. Maybe it smells like fresh kitty litter, which according to kitty *must* be soiled (change the kitty litter in the pan, and the cat will be there within minutes).

I threw it out, still have another and keeping it away from kitty!

I have two very ornery cats. I wouldn't put it past the one girl. Hey, couldn't this be used as a source of ammonia? I left some soaking in a mason jar overnight and it no longer smells after a rinse this morning. Still, not sure if it's worth it.

Ammonia source, LOL! I suppose it could. I just didn't feel like experimenting in this case.

I'm think I'm a bit biased due to a past experience. A cat had been peeing on the ashes in my fireplace unnoticed. I rarely light the fireplace here in Louisiana, but when I did, OMG. It was so intense I had to leave the house.

After that, the idea of an aquarium smelling even faintly of cat pee was unacceptable.

I wouldn't risk it. It just isn't costly enough to bother. I know no one likes to spend extra money.... but think of the bigger picture.

I KNEW there was a reason I quit keeping cats in the house.

Oh forgot, my better half has an allergy problem with them never mind.

My eyes are watering just thinking about that, lol. You all should know me, I'll do pretty much anything to save a buck. The turface no longer smells, but I'm thinking I may give this some serious thought before attempting to use it. Thanks all.
