Smile Substrate

Random question, but my kid brought home 4 buckets of sand from the beach (thin grain white sand), could I hypothetically use that as substrate for fish that like that sort of sand? Or do I actually have to purchase the sand from a store because it goes through treatments, or is safer, etc?

You could probably use it, but I would be worried about buffering and grain size. If it is very fine grained it can get kicked up easily and into your filters. You would have to give it a really good rinse and possible bake it to ensure no nasties are being put into the tank.

I would recommend getting some pool filter sand, its safe and the tan - white in colour.
